Available courses
On successful completion the learner will be a ‘First Aider in the Work Place’ and they will be able to:
- Understand the role of the first aider including reference to:
- The importance of preventing cross infection
- The need for recording incidents and actions
- Use of available equipment
- Assess the situation and circumstances in order to act safely, promptly, and effectively in an emergency
- Administer first aid to a casualty who is unconscious (including seizure)
- Administer CPR including using an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED)
- Administer first aid to a casualty who is choking
- Administer first aid to a casualty who is wounded or bleeding
- Administer first aid to a casualty who is suffering from shock
- Provide appropriate first aid for minor injuries including small cuts, grazes, bruises, minor burns (inc. electrical) and scalds, splinters
- Administer first aid to a casualty with injuries to bones, muscles and joints, including suspected spinal injuries
- Administer first aid to a casualty with head injuries
- Administer first aid to a casualty with burns (inc. electrical) & scalds
- Administer first aid to a casualty with eye injuries
- Administer first aid to a casualty with chest injuries
- Administer first aid to a casualty with sudden poisoning
- Administer first aid to a casualty with anaphylactic shock
- Recognise the presence of major illness and provide appropriate first aid (including heart attack, stroke, epilepsy, asthma, diabetes)
- Provide appropriate first aid for hypothermia and heat stroke

- Use of available equipment - Plan for first aid emergencies
- Deal with emergencies
- Deal with unconsciousness
- CPR including using an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED)
- Recognise and deal with shock
- Recognise and respond appropriately to anaphylactic shock
- Recognise and respond appropriately to electric shock
- Recognise and respond appropriately to bleeding
- Recognise and respond appropriately to cases of poisoning
- Respond appropriately to burns and scalds
- Respond appropriately to choking
- Respond appropriately to fractures
- Respond appropriately to head, neck and back injuries
- Respond appropriately to foreign objects in eyes, ears and nose and eye injuries
- Respond appropriately to bites and stings
- Respond appropriately to effects of heat and cold...heat exhaustion, heat stroke, hypothermia
- Respond appropriately to febrile convulsions
- Recognise and respond appropriately to the emergency needs of chronic medical conditions including: epilepsy, asthma, diabetes
- Recognise and respond appropriately to meningitis and other serious sudden childhood illness
- Provide appropriate first aid for minor injuries, small cuts, grazes, bruises.
